Traveling & The Process
ABOUT THE WORK
This series of work is developed when I was doing my Masters in Multi-disciplinary Printmaking, in University of The West of England, Bristol.
The experience of walking along the coast at Dorset during Easter break in 2010 inspired me. It was the first time I walked across the open fields. My experience of following the footpaths, looking for stiles and lost in the open fields due to confusing signposts were the main inspiration for the project. Following the footpath and searching for traces of a vague footpath in the open fields reminded me of printmaking. Footprints are traces of human or animals. A footpath is formed by accumulation of footprints. It is a process of traveling and translation. I see the similarity in printing process. Hence, I came out with the idea of printing process as traveling process.
Printmaking isn't used to produce this series of work, but as an idea instead. I use photography as the medium. The photographs I used in my work are documentation of changes of footpaths, stiles, puddles, signposts, doors, etc, which I see them as gateways that lead. I cut the 'gateway' by using scalpel and layer them which signifies traveling from one space to another, revealing the peculiar, unknown space.
This idea is still new. I am looking forward to further develop it. Explore it in different ways with different environment.
